Yesterday, I went to my friend Christina’s barbecue where we had some great ribeye steaks. (Great job manning the grill, Will!) We also had grilled gopchang (intestines), which is usually my favorite, but at the end of the day, the ribeye won out.

Feet/hooves at Heritage Meat Shop and prickly Mexican chayote at...

Feet/hooves at Heritage Meat Shop and prickly Mexican chayote at Essex Farms at Essex Street Market. However, after a really late lunch of charsiu ramen at Mitsuwa, a meat feast didn’t sound too appealing. Luckily, my brother changed his mind at the last minute, and we ended up at BCD Tofu House in Fort Lee for soondubu jigae (Korean silken tofu stew). We still ate meat (galbi and lots of fried fish), but we like to think the tofu balanced everything out. I ordered the Alabama BBQ Chicken (bama bbq sauce, cotija, slaw) and the Burnt Ends Chili (brisket & ground beef, lime crema, house pickled jalapenos). I liked the chili more even though it was pretty much all ground beef. It reminded me of a smoky sloppy joe kicked up with jalapenos. I’ve been looking for a galbi combo spot since BCD closed down a few months ago. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as BCD. The galbi, although better-quality, was a little salty and wasn’t hot when served. As for the naengmun, it was good except the noodles weren’t as chewy as I like. Not mushy, just less chewy. Some people may prefer this, and if so, go for it! Me, I’ll stick to Kunjip for naengmyun even if they don’t have a combo.

We celebrated her birthday this weekend over Korean BBQ followed by a tiramisu cake ($28) from Shilla Bakery for dessert. Since it was from a Korean bakery, the cake was lighter and less sweet than a cake from an Italian bakery, but it worked out perfectly since we’d just gorged on ribs. The dark cocoa powder on top didn’t hurt either.
